README file for Gullah data

This collection of files contains data from 41 African American mainland speakers (MD9N to GA37M!) and 21 Gullah speakers 
from the Sea Islands (SC45GA to GA48GC).  The 41 African American mainland speakers are also included in the LAMSAS
Text Data pages. The Gullah speakers are not included in the LAMSAS Text Data pages. Interviews with Gullah speakers
weere all carried out by Lorenzo Turner. Turner's phonetic transcriptions are somewhat broader than those by Lowman
and McDavid for the African American mainland speakers, and may not be exactly calibrated with them.

Each of the .utf8 files in this collection corresponds to a single item, one line from a page of the worksheets, as 
identified by the xx#yy part of the file name where xx is the page number and yy is the line number. 
The status of each file is further identified by the g, l, or p in the file name: g=grammatical file, l=lexical file, 
and p=pronunciation file.

Each of the files is a comma-delimited text file. To open these files in Excel (or a similar program), use the Data Import 
tool (or just click the Open file button), and follow the prompts to identify the file as "delimited" and then as "comma" 
delimited, not Tab delimited. The file will open normally, and may be resaved as an XLSX file if desired. As
suggested by the file extension, the files are in the UTF8 character encoding; in order to see phonetic entries,
you must have a Unicode font enabled on your computer and selected in Excel for the spreadsheet.
