Digital Archive of the Southern Speech

(DASS)

Director:
William A. Kretzschmar, Jr.

Status of work:
A collection of 64 interviews selected from LAGS by Lee Pederson.

Areas Covered:
Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Texas.

Nature of recordings:
Interviews are sampled across the LAGS region to preserve one Type I, Type II, and Type III speaker, and one African American speaker for each of the sixteen LAGS sectors (African American speakers vary by type across the whole region). The original DASS product on external USB drives (still available from the Linguistic Atlas Project office, and in 2012 from the Linguistic Data Consortium) contains .wav files as well as the .mp3 files distributed on this Web site. The original DASS product features the LICHEN user interface, now also available on this Web site.
