Linguistic Atlas of the North-Central States

Status of field work:
Complete, mostly paper field records, some transcribed from audio tape.


Areas Covered:
The states of Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky, as well as the southern Ontario.


Nature of recordings:
Based on a 75 page questionnaire in the Linguistic Atlas format, edited down from questionnaires used in the Atlantic States. The data was collected from 1933 through 1978,  and includes 564 interviews. 154 audio tapes survive from the region, some of them supplemental to the LANCS speakers.

The original field books and the list manuscripts are housed in the Special Collections repository of the Library, University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia 30602.  Contact the Linguistic Atlas Project office for information about access to original materials.
